Dr. Michel Eric Dyson to Keynote JCBA Scholarship Banquet
21st Annual Jackson County Bar Association’s Judge Kit Carson Roque, Jr. Scholarship Banquet
“COMMEMORATING THE LEGACY OF AFRICAN AMERICAN ACHIEVEMENT IN KANSAS CITY”
The Jackson County Bar Association (JCBA) is thrilled to announce Dr. Michael Eric Dyson as the keynote speaker at the 21st Annual Jackson County Bar Association Judge Kit Carson Roque, Jr. Scholarship Banquet, to be held on Saturday, October 13, 2018, at the Marriott Hotel - 4445 Main St., with a reception at 6:00 PM and a dinner to follow at 7:00 PM.
The JCBA is comprised primarily of African-American attorneys from throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area and stands as one of the oldest minority Bar organizations in the Country.
“Since its creation in the early 20th century, at a time when African-American lawyers were not allowed to join the American Bar Association (ABA) or the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association (KCMBA), the organization’s purpose has been to serve as a resource for its members; to work to ensure justice and equal opportunity for all in the community.” – Marcos Barbosa, 2017 President of JCBA
The Judge Kit Carson Roque, Jr. Scholarship is an annual scholarship banquet sponsored by JCBA and given in honor of the late Judge Kit Carson Roque, Jr., an African American graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City Law School and a former member of the JCBA. Judge Roque was also a dedicated civil rights leader, community activist and child advocate.
Twenty years ago, the first Keynote speaker was then Kansas City Mayor (now Congressman) the Honorable Emanuel Cleaver, II. Cleaver challenged JCBA to persevere in its efforts to help minority law students and their education goals.
"JCBA took on that challenge and have through the years awarded over $160,000 in scholarships to minority high-school and law students.” - Barbosa
